YWCA of Youngstown Offers STEAM Enrichment Camps

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The YWCA is inviting youth in grades 4 through 6 to participate in a series of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) summer camps. One-week and one-day programs are available.

“Stop Motion” will take place from 10 a.m. until noon each day from July 13 through 17. In this camp, children will be taught basic stop motion, the YWCA said. They will brainstorm a short story and then use everyday objects to create a short stop-motion film. Stop motion film consists of pictures stitched together to show movement. The producers use clay figures, banners and paper and any other objects that can be moved. The cost per participant is $40.

“Young Artists” is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. until noon Aug. 10 through 14. In this camp, participants will experiment with various forms of art, including sketching, painting, clay, sculpting and graffiti. They will take field trips and hold an end-of-week showcase party. All materials are included in a cost of $50.

“RadKIDS” will be held from Aug. 17 through 21. This nationally recognized, activity-based program offers lectures and safety drills and teaches physical skills that aim to help children resist or stop violence or harm. Cost is $25.

In the summer lineup is a hip-hop camp.

Another camp will be held for children in kindergarten through third grade that offers enrichment activities, field trips, speakers, and access to all Steam programming. This camp runs through Aug. 28 with daily and weekly rates available.

Limited scholarships are available for the camps, the YWCA said.

Care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers ages six weeks to five years will be offered as well at the YWCA Discovery Place, a licensed center. The infant and toddler care and preschool program feature certified teachers and a low ratio of staff to children.

The preschool program also includes a Steam-focused and age-appropriate curriculum for kindergarten readiness, enrichment classes that include language arts, cultural diversity, and music, arts and crafts, indoor/outdoor free and structured play, field trips, and breakfast, lunch and snacks.
