YSU to Host Filmmaker, Screen Documentary

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Youngstown State University’s art department and the Beecher Art & Technology Series will screen Brett Kashmere’s documentary, “From Deep,” April 15 at 6 p.m. in DeBartolo Hall, Room 132. The artist will also be available for a question-and-answer session at the film’s conclusion.

“From Deep” is a feature-length experimental documentary about the game of basketball and its shifting place within 20th Century American history and culture. It focuses on the game’s evolution from its indoor New England roots, to a Midwestern small town phenomenon, to an outdoor city game, with particular emphasis on its merger with hip hop in the mid-1980s and the rise of Michael Jordan as the world’s first corporate-branded athlete.

The documentary premiered at the Ann Arbor Film Festival in 2014. Its Canadian premiere was the closing night film for the 2014 Images Festival in Toronto, where it received the Deluxe Cinematic Vision Award for excellence and innovation in the visual realization of work by a Canadian film or video artist.

Kashmere is a Canadian-born, Pittsburgh-based filmmaker, curator and writer.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available for a nominal fee in the M24 lot accessed from Grant Street closest to McDonald’s on Fifth Avenue.
