$265K Awarded for Cleanup, Remediation of Former Auto Parts Store

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning County Land Reutilization Corporation will receive $265,100 for the cleanup and remediation of a property in the city.

The project at the former Wick Automotive Supply site, 1034 Wick Ave., will involve the removal of universal and hazardous waste – including asbestos – from the deteriorated structure.

The property has been vacant for several years and is in significant disrepair, with collapsed ceilings and rusted materials. The remediation will include asbestos abatement, building demolition and site restoration, with clover ground cover. The project is expected to create six new jobs.

“It is important that the state allocates funds to projects like this, so they have the ability to properly rebuild and create economic opportunities throughout the region,” state Sen. Al Cutrona, R-33rd, said in a news release.

Funding for the project is part of $52 million awarded for brownfield remediation and building demolition projects across the state. The funding, announced Tuesday by Gov. Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development, was awarded through the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program.

“Safely redeveloping a site so close to Stambaugh Auditorium and areas of our community that attract patrons and guests is really important for our long-term goals in the Mahoning Valley,” state Rep. Lauren McNally, D-59th, said in a news release. “I’m thankful our local partners sought out these state dollars.”
