Initial Jobless Claims Spike in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Initial jobless claims in Ohio surged to 11,232 for the week ended Nov. 6, the most initial claims since the week ended Sept. 18 when 12,952 claims were reported.

Claims were up from 7,375 reported the week ended Oct. 30, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Continued unemployment claims ticked up as well to 43,713, which is 3,663 more than what was reported the week prior. Ohio reported 43,713 total unemployment claims the week ended Nov. 6, which is down from the 47,425 claims reported for the prior week.

Ohio’s unemployment rate in September was 5.4% compared to the national rate of 4.8%. The state’s labor force participation rate for that month was 61.1%, compared to the national rate of 61.6%.

In Pennsylvania, initial claims for the week ended Oct. 30 – the most recent data available – were 8,660, up from 8,511 the week prior, reported the Center for Workforce Information and Analysis. Continued unemployment claims in the commonwealth declined to 95,968 from 105,794 the week ended Oct. 23.
