Valley Unemployment Rates Rise in January

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – January unemployment rates for the Mahoning Valley region were up from the month before, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday morning.

Rates in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties were up more than a full percentage point, and rates in the area’s two largest cities rose by nearly two full points, according to the data, which was released online. 

Trumbull County’s unemployment rate in January was 6.0%, up 1.5 percentage points from 4.5% in December but down from 8.8% in January 2021. Mahoning County unemployment increased by nearly as much, rising to 5.7% from 4.3% in December, but was down form 8.6% in January 2021.

Columbiana County’s January unemployment rate was 5.3%, up from 3.9% in December but down from 7.6% in January 2021. 

The city of Warren reported a 6.8% unemployment rate in January, up from 5.1% in December, while Youngstown’s 6.7% rate for January was up from 5.2% from the month before. Both cities reported 11.1% unemployment rates in January 2021. 

The Youngstown-Warren Boardman metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer county in Pennsylvania, reported a 6.0% unemployment rate up, from 4.5% in December and down from 8.8% in January 2011.
