Local Unemployment Rates Rise in June

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Area unemployment rates rose in June, with rates for Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counites all at 5% or higher for the month.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the latest monthly numbers Tuesday morning, which showed a 5.3% unemployment rate in Trumbull County, just a tenth of a percentage point higher than Mahoning County’s 5.2% rate. Columbiana County’s unemployment rate for the month was 5.0%.

All three counties’ unemployment rates were up more than a full point from the month before, though down nearly two points from a year earlier.

Trumbull County’s rate was 4.1% in May and 7.1% in June 2021. Mahoning County’s rate was 4.0% in May and 7.0% in June last year. Columbiana County reported a 3.8% rate in May and was 6.9% in June 2021.

Rates for Youngstown and Warren last month were up substantially from the month before but also reflected improvements from a year earlier.     

Youngstown’s unemployment rate in June was 7.0%, fifth highest among Ohio cities the department tracks monthly. That was up from 5.2% in May but down from 9.6% in June 2021. Warren’s unemployment rate was 6.5%, up from 4.8% the month before and down from 9.2% in June 2021.   

The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counites in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, recorded unemployment in June at 5.3%, down nearly two full percentage points from 7.2% a year earlier but up from 4.1% in May.
