Local Unemployment Rates Remain Largely Unchanged Over Month
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown and Warren tied for the fourth-highest unemployment among Ohio cities in July, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported.
The two cities’ 7.0% unemployment rates last month were exceeded by Lorain’s 8.3%, Maple Heights’ 7.5% and Marion’s 7.3% among Ohio cities the department released rates for Tuesday morning.
Overall, July unemployment rates for local cities and counties month-over-month were stable, though down substantially from a year earlier.
Youngstown’s July rate was unchanged from the month before, while Warren’s rate reflected an increase of half a percentage point from June’s 6.5%. Both cities’ rates were down markedly from a year earlier, when Youngstown’s rate was 9.3% and Warren’s was 8.6%.
Trumbull County’s 5.3% unemployment rate and Columbiana County’s 4.9% in July were both unchanged from the month before, while Mahoning County’s 5.1% was down a tenth of a percentage point from the month before. In July 2021, Mahoning and Trumbull counties each reported 6.5% unemployment rates, while Columbiana County’s unemployment rate was 6.4%.
The July unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., reported a 5.3% unemployment rate in July, unchanged form the monthbefore and down from 6.8% in July 2021.
