Youngstown, Warren Post 7.1% Unemployment Rates in August

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown and Warren, which posted identical 7.1% unemployment rates in August, were tied with Maple Heights for the second-highest unemployment rate among Ohio cities for the month.

Only the city of Marion posted a higher unemployment rate last month, 7.3%, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday morning. 

The unemployment rate in the Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities was unchanged from July but were down from a year earlier. In August 2021, Warren reported a 7.5% unemployment rate and Youngstown’s rate was 8.6%.

Both Mahoning and Trumbull counties repotted modest upticks in unemployment last month from July. In Trumbull County, the unemployment rate was 5.4% last month, up from 5.3% the month before. Mahoning County’s 5.3% in August similarly was up a tenth of a percentage point from July’s 5.2%.

Columbiana County’s 5.0% rate in August was unchanged from the month before.

In August 2021, Columbiana County’s unemployment rate was 5.7%, Mahoning County’s was 5.9% and Trumbull County’s was 6.0%.

The August unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, was 5.4%, up from 5.3% the month before and down from 6.2% in August 2021.
