Local Unemployment Rates Rise in January

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local unemployment rates in January rose from the month before but were down from those posted a year earlier, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday morning.

Columbiana County posted a January unemployment rate of 5.4%, more than a full percentage point from 4.2% the month before and just shy of January 2022’s 5.5% rate.

Trumbull County posted a 5.3% rate in January, up from 4.5% in December but down from 6% in January 2022. Mahoning County’s unemployment rate was 5.1%, down from 5.8% a year earlier but up nearly a full percentage point from 4.2% in December.

The Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities, Youngstown and Warren, posted the second- and third-highest unemployment rates among Ohio’s cities tracked by the state department.

The January unemployment rate in Youngstown was 5.9%, up from 5.2% in December but down a full point from January 2022. Warren’s unemployment rate was slightly lower in January, 5.8%, down from 6.9% a year earlier but up from 5.3% in December.

Sandusky had the highest unemployment rate among Ohio’s cities at 6.8%.

The unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area was 5.2%, up from 4.4% in December but down from 5.8% in January 2022. The MSA includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania.
