Alan Brant Dies, Led Second National Bank
CORTLAND, Ohio – Alan G. Brant, who led the growth of the former Second National Bank of Warren, died Monday in the Lake Vista Retirement Community. He was 83 and had been in ill health.
During his tenure as CEO of Second National Bank – its network of offices today part of Huntington Bank – assets increased to $1.54 billion and the nine offices in 1985 had grown to 36 in nine counties when he retired in 1999.
Brant was born March 29, 1932, in Columbus and graduated in 1950 from Warren G. Harding High School. He earned his baccalaureate in 1954 from Ohio Wesleyan University and certificates from several banking school.
He served three years in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot, separating as a captain.
Among the honors accorded him was being chosen in 1964 as Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.
In 1971, Brant was named a senior vice president of Cleveland-based Central National Bank (Centran) – today a part of KeyBank – as manager of its retail system that consisted of 55 branches and 500 employees. In 1980, Centran named him president of its bank in Akron, a post he held until joining Second National Bank.
As its president and CEO, Brant led its conversion to a one-bank holding company in 1987 then its growth the next 12 years. Second National was recognized in 1994 as one of the best-performing banks in Ohio.
In 2003, the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber recognized his and the bank’s civic involvement by bestowing on him the William G. Lyden Spirit of the Valley Award.
Among others, he leaves his wife, the former Nancy Hennis, whom he married Aug. 7, 1954, and two daughters, Cynthia Fitzgerald of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carol Quigley of Libertyville, Ill., and five grandchildren.
