Junior Golf Tournament Begins Tuesday at Mill Creek
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Golfers from around the world ages 12 to 15 will gather next week at Mill Creek Golf Course for the 2018 Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation American Junior Golf Association Junior All-Star tournament.
The 54-hole championship tournament will take place on the South Course from June 19 to June 21.
With multi-day hotel lodging, dining, shopping and other activities, the event is projected to create a financial impact to the Mahoning Valley to the tune of $458,000 plus $10,000 to $12,000 in charitable contributions, said Brian Tolnar, PGA director of golf for Mill Creek Golf Course.
That’s up from the $355,000 impact the tournament had last year, he added.
The week-long tournament is one of 155 the American Junior Golf Association holds annually, and draws players and their families from all over the world, including Canada, China, Mexico, Columbia and the United Kingdom.
This is the third year that Mill Creek Golf Course will host the tournament’s 12- to 15-year-old age group for boys and girls.
The event includes a Junior-Am Regional Qualifier tournament June 17 as well as a charity Junior-Amateur tournament on June 18.
The first two rounds July 19 and 20 are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the final round July 21 at 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony. Spectators are welcome throughout the event.
In May, a $110,000 donation from the Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation named the organization as a four-year title sponsor of the tournament.
