Alta Care Receives $8K for Literacy Program

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Alta Care Group has received $8,000 from the PNC Foundation to support the health-care organization’s Upstream literacy and social-emotional development program.

The home-based program is aimed at parents and guardians of children in preschool through second grade.

“We are grateful for PNC’s trust in our organization that their dollars are being well-spent on a highly effective program that sets children on the right path for academic success,” said Alta CEO Joe Shorokey in a statement.

Added Ted Schmidt, PNC’s president of the Youngstown region: “Research has shown that the first five years of a child’s life are critical to long-term achievement. We believe that an investment in pre-K students makes good economic sense and plants the seeds for a dynamic workforce of tomorrow.”

The donation is part of the PNC Foundation’s Grow Up Great initiative, which focuses on early childhood education and community development, including arts and culture. Since it was founded in 2004, the initiative has awarded more than $350 million to programs aimed at children from birth to age 5.
