Aqua Replacing 7,000 Feet of Water Main in Struthers
STRUTHERS, Ohio – Aqua is investing $3 million to replace 7,000 feet of water main serving customers in Struthers.
Rudzik Excavating of Struthers has been selected to perform the work, which is expected to begin this week and conclude in November.
The project will replace water main along portions of State Street, Elm Street and Park Avenue and the entire length of Columbus, Moore and Reed Streets in Struthers; 10-inch pipes will be replaced with 12-inch pipes, and 6-inch pipes will be replaced with 8-inch pipes to improve water flow for high-demand needs such as firefighting.
Also, 20 new hydrants will be installed to improve fire protection, and 27 new valves will be installed to isolate sections of main for future maintenance or repairs.
“In this project, we’ll be replacing almost a mile and a half of aging water main in an area prone to breaks,” said Jennifer Johnson, Aqua’s area manager. “The driving force behind this project is improving service reliability to our customers.
Johnson said the 139 customers along the project area will receive new company-owned service lines. Owners will experience short-term service disconnections in the fall as they are connected to the new mains. They will be notified in advance of the interruptions.
Traffic will be maintained, but temporary lane restrictions will be necessary while work is being conducted in the immediate area.
The project is part of the $8 million that Aqua will invest locally in the Mahoning Valley this year and $65 million across the company’s 40 Ohio systems, Johnson said.
