Area High Schools Make Way to State, Regional Tournaments
COLUMBUS, Ohio – South Range High School’s softball team is heading to the Division III state semifinals, where it will face Johnstown at 10 a.m. Friday at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
The winner of Friday’s game takes on the Sherwood Fairview-Wheelersburg winner in Saturday’s Division III championship game starting at 4 p.m. in Akron.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association Tuesday announced its state pairings for softball, track and field and lacrosse, as well as regional baseball.
In Division III baseball, South Range plays Gilmour Academy at 5 p.m. Thursday in a Region 9 semifinal at Massillon Washington High School. The winner plays the Berkshire-Canton Central Catholic winner at 5 p.m. Friday, with the Region 9 champion going to next week’s state semifinals. In a Mahoning Valley battle in Division II, Salem plays Canfield in a Region 5 semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday at GlenOak High School near Canton. The winner challenges the Akron Hoban-Chagrin Falls winner at 5 p.m. Friday, with the Region 5 champion heading to next week’s state semifinals. In Division IV baseball, Warren John F. Kennedy High School is playing Columbia Station Columbia High School at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Strongsville High School in a Region 13 semifinal. Mathews High School is in the other half of the regional bracket, playing Tiffin Calvert at 4:30 p.m., Thursday. The winners from both games play each other at 2 p.m. Friday in the Region 13 final with the victor heading to next week’s state semifinals. The entire regional Division IV bracket can be found HERE.
There are fewer than 150 athletes from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties at this year’s Division I, II and III state track and field meets at three separate Columbus-area sites: Hilliard Darby High School (Division I), Pickerington North High School (Division II) and Westerville North High School (Division III). The meets are Friday and Saturday.
The state track and field meet has been held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on The Ohio State University campus since 2004, but this year OSU did not want the meet at its facility, says Tim Stried, OHSAA director of media relations. The governing body of Ohio high school athletics hopes to be back at Jesse Owens facility in 2022.
McDonald’s boys have the most area individual representatives at any site with 11. McDonald and Maplewood girls each have eight athletes competing. McDonald boys and girls teams each won Division III regional titles on Friday at Massillon Perry High School.
Male seated athletes, who compete in wheelchairs, from Boardman, Canfield and Warren G. Harding High Schools are part of the Division I meet at Hillard Darby.
