Area Unemployment Rates Experience Slight Rise in September

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local unemployment rates remained stable or inched slightly higher in September, the Ohio Department of Job and family services reported Tuesday morning.

Mahoning County’s unemployment rate last month was 5.1%, up from 5.0% the month before and up from 4.0% in September 2023. Columbiana County’s rate saw a similar rise, with its 4.7% September rate also up a tenth of a percentage point from the month before, when it was 4.6%, and was up from 3.9% in September 2023.

Trumbull County’s September rate was unchanged from the month before, 5.2%, but was up from 4.0% a year earlier.

Trumbull County’s largest city, Warren, posted the highest September unemployment rate among Oho cities, 6.6%, unchanged from the month before but up from 5.0% in September 2023.

Youngtown, Mahoning County’s largest city, had the second highest rate of Ohio cities, 6.5%, up from 6.4% the month before and up from 5.1% in September 2023.

The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area reported a 4.7% unemployment rate I September, up from 5.0% in August and from 3.8% in September 2024. The MSA covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa.
