Total combined new- and used-car sales among all of the dealers in the Greater Cleveland association in February were 14,415, down from 16,572 in February 2021 – a 13% decline, according to a release from the association.
“The beginning of the year has been challenging for northern Ohio, with inventory constraints continuing to limit sales,” said Louis J. Vitantonio, president of the association. “We do not anticipate much inventory until late in 2022 or 2023.”
With new-vehicle supply at the same level since Thanksgiving, customer demand remains strong as dealers continue to hold prices at or above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
“The surge in new-car prices appears to have peaked,” says Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Cox Automotive. “Yet, while we expect vehicle supply to improve, it will continue to be tight, particularly through the first half of the year. Because of this, we expect prices to remain high for the foreseeable future, but car shoppers can rest assured we don’t anticipate any more record highs.”
On average, nonluxury vehicles sold for $42,859 in January, down $294 – the third consecutive monthly decrease. However, consumers are still paying an average of $900 above sticker price, Kelley Blue Book reports.
