CANFIELD, Ohio – Growing up, Kim Hoover was heavily inspired by her grandmother’s baking. In her small bakery at 7 Lisbon St. in Canfield, her grandmother’s recipes are a tradition she maintains.
About 10 years ago, Hoover opened her bakery with her grandmother, working out of her house. It was a career change for her that came after years of working in retail and deciding she wanted to go in a difference direction.
“I had to figure out and regroup,” Hoover says. “You give so much time to a business and if I was going to work for anyone, I wanted to work for myself.”
This August marks seven years that Hoover has operated the bakery on Lisbon Street.
Until her death a few years ago, Hoover says her grandmother, Eileen, was always involved with her work at the bakery.
“Her dream was to be in the bakery with me,” Hoover says. “Everything we did she supervised and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She was my biggest critic. She was my biggest inspiration for everything.”
Hoover says her grandmother taught her everything she knows about baking.
“There’s a lot of history with the recipes,” she says. “My grandma worked with me when we first opened and our sugar bottom brownies are her recipe. She passed away two years ago so we are carrying on her tradition and it’s a little piece of her here.”
Over the years, Hoover has enjoyed much success. She bakes and ices four or five wedding cakes every weekend in addition to other orders. During the holidays, Hoover offers cookie trays and pies for order.
Hoover, who has “deep roots” in Canfield herself, says she loves the community. After school, children often walk over to buy a snack and to do their homework, she says.
“I’ve seen them grow,” Hoover says. “It’s crazy. We now have been here seven years and a lot of them have graduated. They grow up quick.”
