SALEM – The February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine brought an immediate response from United Way of Northern Columbiana County agencies, with emergency relief services and long-term support services, reports George W.S. Hays, executive director.
In June, United Way joined with Compco and Gopher-a-Run to host the East Palestine Road2Recovery 5K/Hometown Walk. More than 630 people participated. The event raised $170,000.
Unlocking Potential, United Way’s mentoring program for fifth- and sixth- grade students, entered its third year in Salem City Schools. In October, the program was introduced to East Palestine fifth- and sixth-grade students.
Also last year, the annual campaign surpassed its goal for the third consecutive year. The 2024 campaign goal is $228,300, Hays says.
