Chamber Announces Athena Scholarship Winners

YOUNGTSOWN, Ohio – Although the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber has canceled its annual Athena Award dinner this year, it is still moving ahead with the presentation of the Athena Scholarship, awarding it to Gabriella Gensamer.

The graduate of Western Reserve High School and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will attend Youngstown State University this fall to student electrical engineering. Gensamer had a 4.0 GPA and was Western Reserve’s valedictorian.

Her interest in STEM fields led the school to start a biomedical science class when Gensamer was a sophomore. She also took part in MCCTC’s biotechnology program and was a representative for the technical school and its Valley STEM+ME2 Academy for a meeting with Gov. Mike Dewine and his cabinet.

In addition to the $1,500 Athena Scholarship, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield sponsored two $1,250 scholarship, this year presented to Annabelle Himes – who was also named Western Reserve High School valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA – and McDonald High School graduate Sophia Klase.

Hime will study business at YSU, while Klase will student early childhood education there.

All three students will be recognized at the 2021 Athena Award dinner.
