Chamber Salute to Feature U.S. Assistant Energy Secretary

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy for Fossil Energy Steve Winberg will be one of the featured speakers at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s Salute to Business Breakfast,

Winberg will join previously announced speaker Majida Mourad, vice president of government relations at Tellurian Inc., at the Sept. 3 event, which will be held at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Centre in Boardman.

Also at the event, the chamber will present the Spirit of the Valley Award to Charles Jarvis, publisher of the Tribune Chronicle/The Vindicator, and the Spirit of the Chamber Award to Michael Schrock, Mahoning Valley regional president of TCF Bank.

Winberg was nominated to his post by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2017. He is responsible for the management and oversight of fossil energy’s research development program, encompassing coal, oil and natural gas, as well as the Office of Petroleum Reserves.

He previously served as vice president for CONSOL Energy Research & Development and as a senior program manager at Battelle Memorial Institute.

“We’re honored to welcome Assistant Secretary Winberg to the supply chain capital of the Utica Shale,” Guy Coviello, president of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Foundation, said in a news release announcing the visit. “With a state-of-the-art, natural-gas-fired power plant in Lordstown and pipe maker Vallourec Star in Youngstown, there is plenty of reason for the Department of Energy to take note of what the Valley has to offer.”

The timing of Winberg’s visit coincides with a community-wide effort to develop a smart logistics hub in Lordstown and North Jackson featuring the electrification of vehicles, including production of Lordstown Motors Co.’s Endurance pickup truck and the LG Chem/General Motors partnership Ultium, producing batteries for electric vehicles. Winberg’s background includes alternative fuel vehicles, fuel cells and end-use applications for fossil energy.
