Chaney Wrestlers Take First Trip to OHSAA Sectionals
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Seven Chaney High School wrestlers are taking the mats in district competition for the first time in school history, competing at the Division II sectional Feb. 27 at Beachwood High School.
Chaney’s program began during the 2019-20 school year as a club sport, but became an Ohio High School Athletic Association varsity sports this season, allowing wrestlers to compete in the OHSAA postseason.
The wrestlers are juniors Courtney Jenkins, Eric Brady, CyRenity Bowman, Charles Lewis-Emerson, Christian Jones and JR Tellington, along with freshman Mark Stankork. Chaney’s athletic director Casey Bogerd is excited these wrestlers are coming back for the 2021-22 season.
“That means this will only get bigger and better as we move forward,” Bogerd says.
Head coach Josh Shaffer and assistant coach Amadeus Vanderveer mentor the Chaney wrestlers. Shaffer is happy to see the athletes put in the work the last two years to get to this point, he says.
“It’s been an honor working with kids throughout this process,” Shaffer says. “The fact that our wrestlers have remained academically and physically fit during a pandemic is quite an accomplishment. It’s been humbling as a coach to see our wrestlers put the time and dedication in to achieve such high accomplishments.”
