Company Application Period Extended for Tech Intern Program
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Companies now have more time to join the latest round of the Diversity & Inclusion Technology Internship Program.
The program was accepting applications through March 3, but the application period has been extended to March 17 because more students than expected have applied, and more companies are needed to participate.
Any business with a technology need can participate. Interns can help create mobile apps, build websites, implement new software and enhance cybersecurity, among other possible responsibilities.
The Ohio Third Frontier, a program in the Ohio Department of Development, will reimburse companies for two-thirds of an intern’s wages up to $7,500. Companies can hire up to four interns per round and be reimbursed up to $30,000.
“This is a great deal for businesses,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “They get the tech talent they need, and we pay most of the salary. This program isn’t just for tech companies. A business on Main Street needs help with technology, and we have the students who can make a difference.”
Through 10 rounds of the program, 768 interns have been hired. Of those, 81% have been African American, Asian, Hispanic, other ethnicities and white females.
“I would highly recommend this internship because of the skilled student professionals, the quick and easy application process for companies and the substantial wage assistance the program provides,” said Karen Cornelissen, customer success manager at Adyptation. “While some internships may boil down to coffee and errands, these internships make an impact from the start and can grow into something long-lasting. These students have skills that are in high demand, so companies who haven’t participated are missing out on an opportunity to meet these candidates, recruit them and then retain them.”
Internships for this round can occur between May 1 and Oct. 31. Another round will open later this year for internships that occur between Nov. 1 and April 30, 2024.
