The 2000 Congressional race in the then 17th District of Ohio grew even more interesting when former U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams vied for the Republican Party’s nomination for his old seat. Williams was elected to represent the 19th District which included Youngstown and Warren in 1978, which became part of the 17th District after the 1980 census. Williams served two terms as congressman before he was defeated in 1984 by a rambunctious sheriff – Democrat James A. Traficant Jr. Williams lost the 2000 Republican primary to Paul Alberty, who was soundly defeated by Traficant in the general election.
