Greenville Students Compete in Best of PA Awards Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — After earning the Outstanding Overall Program award in this year’s What’s So Cool About Manufacturing Contest for the West Central region, students from Greenville Jr/Sr High Schools are moving on to the state competition next week.

The What’s So Cool About Manufacturing Best of PA 2020 Awards will be presented at 12:30 p.m. June 9 via virtual event. Greenville in Mercer County is one of 22 schools that will compete for first, second and third place.

The Northwest Industrial Resource Center coordinated three of the regional contests in the commonwealth, including the West Central (Mercer County), Northwest (Erie and Crawford counties) and Forest & Oil regions (Venango, Clarion, Forest and Warren counties). The other two schools competing in the Best of PA event are Meadville Area Middle School from the Northwest region, and Oil City Area Middle School from the Forest & Oil region.

For their video, Greenville students worked with Hodge Foundry, Greenville. Five schools competed in the West Central contest, which held a virtual awards ceremony April 26. Greenville also took home the Viewers’ Choice award with 867 votes.

The team from Greenville Jr/Sr High Schools includes Matthew Gehly, teacher coach, and students Lia Carter, Bella Gehly, Peyton Davis, Aubrey Cadman and Maggie Goodlin.

This is the seventh year for the Best of PA awards event. Because of social distancing requirements, the event will stream live on YouTube. Videos for all participants can be viewed at the What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? website.

Since 2013, the What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? Student Video Contest has accrued more than 3 million votes during regional competitions. More than half of Pennsylvania school districts have participated.
