Greg Smith Recalls Father’s Philanthropy

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Greg Smith, chairman of Compco, says his father, Clarence R. Smith Jr., did things quietly, never seeking accolades.

He can’t count how many businesses and nonprofits his father seeded and funded.

“When he gave his money, and it made a huge difference, it was a blessing for him,” Smith says. “He always thought money and possessions were his to manage, not his to keep.”
