Lifelong Learning Institute Semester Begins with Chautauqua

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute will begin its fall semester with Chautauqua on Aug. 30.

The institute’s events are presented by Ohio Living Park Vista and are based on the principal that keeping your mind active as you age is as important as keeping your body active.

Lectures are open to people age 55 and older. Programs are available to residents of Ohio Living Park Vista at no charge and to the community for $5 to $15, which varies depending on the lecture.

The Aug. 30 schedule Aug. 30  includes:

  • 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on President Teddy Roosevelt and the Turn of the Century with Dr. Greg Ferro.
  • 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. on European Expressionists with Felicia Zavarella Stadelman.
  • 6 to 7 p.m. on Turn of the Century Music with Harmony Quarter.

The Lifelong Learning Institute will continue in the fall semester with a variety of topics including an introduction to yoga, Italian architecture, zoo animals, interior design, Sikhism, the Hubble Telescope, the Holocaust and assassination attempts.

Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Registration is required in advance.

The semester concludes Dec. 7-9 with a weekend workshop entitled “Conscious Eldering: Aging with Intention and Passion” led by author Ron Pevny. It focuses on four key themes including belief, release of the past, purpose and community.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our lifelong learners to really focus on themselves,” said Marise Sahyoun, MVLLI director. “Ron is a highly coveted speaker, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to offer his workshop to our learners.”

Pevny has dedicated 40 years to helping people as they negotiate life’s transitions. He has presented many conscious aging programs at retreat centers around the nation for 15 years. This workshop is open to both Ohio Living Park Vista residents and non-residents, and the cost to attend is $50 per person. The deadline to register is Nov. 1.
