Mercer County Food Bank Launching Sizzlin’ Summer Series

SHARON, Pa. – The Mercer County Food Bank is launching Sizzlin’ Summer, a fundraising series with a “goal of sacking summer hunger.”

A fundraiser is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Block by Nova Destinations, 23 Chestnut Ave., featuring Tiki Trivia. The Block will donate 15% of the proceeds, as well as additional proceeds collected from the sale of select specialty drinks, a news release states.

The Sizzlin’ Summer series will move to Vey’s Pub and Grille, 3176 E. State St., Hermitage, Pa., on July 25 for a Christmas in July event. On Aug. 10, a cornhole tournament will take place at Talbot’s Taproom and Terrace, 787 Mercer Grove City Road, Mercer, Pa.

“With the release of Map the Meal Gap, and given the increased numbers of residents and children needing food assistance right here in Mercer County, our hope is that the community will join us for the Sizzlin’ Summer Series, which will support local restaurants and our hungry neighbors,” said Rebecca Page, executive director of the Mercer County Food Bank.

Map the Meal Gap, a study released by Feeding America, shows that 4,390 children (20.9% of residents under age 18) living in Mercer County struggle daily with food insecurity, meaning they don’t know where their next meal will come from, the release states.

For every $1 given, Mercer County Food Bank can provide four meals to those in need.
