Mercy Health Confirms New Champion Campus

WARREN, Ohio – Mercy Health – Youngstown will build a 241-bed hospital and medical office complex on a 63-acre site adjacent to the Kent State University Trumbull Campus.

The new St. Joseph Warren campus will serve Trumbull County, “fulfilling Mercy Health’s mission of extending the compassionate ministry of Jesus by improving the health and well-being of communities,” Mercy officials said in a news release today

Mercy expects to break ground in early 2023 on the facility, with an expected opening date late in the same year. The first new hospital construction in the Mahoning Valley since Mercy Health built St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital in 2007, it will provide full inpatient and outpatient services and offer opportunity for future campus expansion.

The project will also include construction of a medical office building adjacent to the hospital that will offer specialist care.

The health care organization said it will maintain operation of the current St. Joseph Hospital campus in Warren, where it will offer outpatient services in the existing medical office building and redevelop the rest of the site into green space for the benefit of the surrounding neighborhood and greater community.

“For more than a century, Mercy Health has responded to the ever-changing health care needs of the Mahoning Valley, through new, enhanced points of care,” Dr. John Luellen, Mercy Health – Lorain and Youngstown president, said in the announcement.

“Given St. Joseph Warren’s current landlocked location and Trumbull County’s growing health care demands, our leadership team identified an opportunity to better serve the community and expand St. Joseph Warren Hospital,” he continued. “This investment in a new hospital campus will not only enable us to provide a better inpatient experience, but it also aligns with our mission to promote the health and well-being of our communities.”

The facility will be more than 400,000 square feet, Mercy said. The project architects are GBBN and Strollo. Thorson Baker and Associates and Heapy are leading engineering. Shook Construction and Turner Construction Company are the construction firms.

“As a health care ministry, we are called to bring good help to those in need. Building a new campus for St. Joseph Warren Hospital will enable Mercy Health to do just that by continuing to provide high-quality, compassionate care to the people of the Mahoning Valley,” said Charlotte Wray, St. Joseph Warren Hospital president. ”We look forward to further developing our footprint in Trumbull County by providing additional access points to the care the community needs.”

The news follows last week’s announcement that Mercy, in a joint venture with Kindred Rehabilitation Services, would build a 60-bed, inpatient acute rehabilitation hospital in the Mahoning Valley. It also is renovating the former VA clinic on Belmont Avenue to house a family medicine residency program, new addiction residency program, an obstetrics and gynecology clinic and its Centering Pregnancy Program.

Earlier this year, Mercy said it would not move forward with a potential expansion project at the Cafaro Co.’s proposed Enterprise Park at Eastwood development.
