More Expansion for One Health Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Expansion will continue in 2020 for One Health Ohio, says CEO Dr. Ron Dwinnells. 

Following the addition of three health centers last year – Rise Recovery in Liberty Township, Lloyd McCoy Health Center in Warren and Northside Dental Center in Youngstown – plans are to open an 18,000-square-foot health-care center at the corner of Glenwood and Indianola avenues in late summer.

“Greenhouses, walking trails, community kitchen, greenspace exercise areas and a merry-go-round carousel, reminiscent of the famous Idora Park, are all planned for this location,” Dwinnells says. “This new facility and the changes we make to our health care delivery model will set the tone for our other health facilities improving patient care, customer and supportive services.”

The increase in sites led to an 11% increase in revenue, he adds. Total investment for renovation and operation of the three sites, which served more than 1,000 patients combined, was more than $2 million.

At Rise Recovery, One Health’s new medication-assisted treatment program served more than 400 patients. In addition to its substance abuse treatment, the program offers wraparound services like medical and dental care and counseling, creating a holistic approach to care.

“This has made the program popular and is very much in demand. One Health plans to significantly increase the program in 2020 and beyond,” Dwinnells says.

The biggest challenge for One Health continues to be maintaining the staff necessary to offer quality care.

“It is frequently difficult to compete with larger and more resourceful cities surrounding the Youngstown area for physicians and high caliber executives,” he says. “But these challenges have been ongoing and thus far we have been modestly successful.”

One Health’s overarching goals since it was founded by Dwinnells in 1986 has been to address the social determinants of health and provide preventive care by addressing issues that can lead to health problems like diabetes or heart disease. That focus will continue into the new decade, he says.

Among the community support provided by One Health in 2019 was sponsorship of the Valley Health and Wellness Expo, a $25,000 donation to the Trumbull County Mental Health & Recovery Board to support training on trauma-informed care and a $10,000 donation in partnership with the Butterflies & Hope Foundation to Alta Care Group to expand screening programs for children at risk of suicide. 

Dwinnells serves on the board of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and the distribution committee of the Hine Memorial Foundation.
