New Castle Rink Wins $100K Penguins Contest
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Hess Ice Rink is the winner of the first “Renovate the Rink” contest, presented by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Pittsburgh Commercial Construction (PittComm).
Hess will receive $100,000 in renovations after winning an online fan vote conducted in February at PittsburghPenguins.com.
The two other finalists were Kirk S. Nevin Arena in Greensburg and The Ice Mine in Connellsville.
More than 400 entries were received during the submission phase of the contest, and 16 rinks were nominated before the finalists were selected. Rinks in nine counties in western Pennsylvania were eligible to participate in the contest.
The Penguins Foundation and PittComm will team up to provide $100,000 in materials and construction management services at Hess.
In addition, The Chemours Company, an official partner of the NHL, will recognize all three finalists by providing them with a set of divider boards to assist with their on-ice programming and youth development. Chemours produces Opteon refrigerants, the preferred refrigerant solution of the NHL
Areas of the rink targeted for improvement in Hess’s application included larger locker rooms, an expanded lobby area, new and improved seating and expanded skate rental.
