New Medical Building Expands Availability of Orthopedic Care

BOARDMAN, Ohio – A $14 million medical office building expanded the availability of orthopedic care in the region when its doors opened this month at 8551 Crossroads Drive.

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates doctors and other representatives held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the new center Friday afternoon.

“It’s significant for a lot of reasons,” said Dr. Thomas Joseph, president of Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates. “This kind of marks our 50th year in the [Mahoning] Valley.”

YOA began as a practice in Canfield in the early 1970s.

“We’ve had growth and expansion, and we’ve outgrown that facility even though it’s an outstanding location,” Joseph said. “Our vision has been to not only expand to a new site but have a single campus that would house our medical office building, which used to be here … and our surgery center, which has been here since 2019.”

The project expands the availability of orthopedic care with the newly constructed outpatient musculoskeletal campus next to the YOA surgery center.

Construction of the 37,000-square-foot, two-story building began in May 2022. The previous site was 19,000 square feet.

“This building was designed for improving efficiency of care and patient satisfaction,” Joseph said. “It’s a much more modern facility with state-of-the-art technology. Everything inside is new. We have a much larger physical therapy gym that has both indoor and outdoor capabilities.”

The new center being attached to the surgery center allows physicians to see patients on one side and perform surgery on the other side of the complex.

The indoor/outdoor rehabilitation areas enhance the sports medicine program for athletes recovering from injuries. The building also includes a cafeteria for patients and employees.

Farmers National Bank of Canfield provided financing, and the transaction involved a ground lease and bond issuance with the Western Reserve Port Authority.

All YOA physicians will see patients at the new medical office building, and services will be consolidated at the musculoskeletal campus.

“Collectively, it’s an almost 50,000-square-foot campus that offers everything from conservative exams and rehabilitation all the way through surgical intervention at our surgery center,” said Taylor Cera, chief operating officer for Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates.

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ new medical office building is located at 8551 Crossroads Drive in Boardman.

The Orthopaedic Urgent Care Center and MRI services remain at 1499 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman. YOA also operates an urgent care center at 1695 Niles-Cortland Road NE, Warren.

“Our Warren office has an orthopedic urgent care, and we remain and will keep all of our rehabilitation and physician services in Warren, in Trumbull County,” Cera said.

The expanded center is distinctive in the region.

“This is unique as one of the only and largest outpatient orthopedic specific campuses,” he said. “I think that’s the uniqueness of this facility.”

State Rep. Al Cutrona of Canfield, R-58th, presented a commendation from the Statehouse to Joseph.

Bob Gesing of NAC, a Boardman High School graduate, designed the project, and DeSalvo Construction was the general contractor.

YOA specialties include foot and ankle, hand and upper extremities, hip, knee, total joint replacement, shoulder and elbow, sports medicine, trauma and fracture and its pain and spine center.
