Steward Brings Physical Rehab Center to Cortland

CORTLAND, Ohio — A new outpatient therapy location is officially open and ready to serve patients in Cortland.

Elm Road Rehabilitation Services of Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital held its grand opening Wednesday, within Steward Health Center on Elm Road.

“This new space gives Cortland the opportunity to have access to Hillside’s resources,” Jeff Koontz, interim administrator of Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, said.

To receive the same kinds of care the new location offers, patients travel into Howland across from Howland Middle School, he said. The expansion will save patients 15 minutes on their commute now. “Their drive doesn’t have to be as far.”

Physical therapy services are offered for such ailments as orthopedic injuries, neck and back pain, shoulder dysfunction, neurological disorders, industrial injuries, motor vehicle injuries, personal injuries, sports injuries, arthritis, and osteoporosis.

Dry needling is also offered, Koontz said. The therapy utilizes a needle inserted into a muscle or nerve area to decrease pain caused by tension. It differs from acupuncture, which is more holistic, he said.

Renovations for the center, which treats patients in their teens up to the elderly, were around $45,000, with another $50,000 in equipment, Koontz said. The space was empty for a while after another healthcare company previously occupied the 2,660 square feet. “We had to freshen up the space and make it ADA-compliant for entry and exits,” he said.

There are three people currently working out of the office. A physical therapist transitioned to the Cortland location from the Austintown office, said Jamie Gunia, regional director of rehab services. “We also have an additional physical therapist which is a position that was created for this facility,” she said. “As evaluations continue to come in, our goal is to continue to grow the staff.”

While the Austintown location offers speech and occupational therapy, the goal is to grow services in Cortland, Koontz said. “First, we’ll add adult occupational therapy, adult speech therapy, then potentially get into pediatric treatment if there’s a need.” There is more room in the Cortland building for growth, he added.

Elm Road Rehabilitation Services, A Service of Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 330 841 2000.
