Ohio Director of Health to Speak at Athena Dinner

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Dr. Amy Acton, a licensed physician in preventive medicine, will be the keynote speaker at the 2020 Athena Award Program, which takes place May 14 at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield.

The Youngstown native who once lived in a tent in the middle of winter when her family was homeless is now director of health for the Ohio Department of Health, a position Gov. Mike DeWine appointed her to in February 2019.

Acton has more than 30 years of experience in medical practice, government and community service, academic and nonprofit administration, consulting, teaching and data analysis. She received her master’s degree in public health from Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine.

This is the 28th year for the event. Since its inception, the Athena event has honored nearly 1,000 women, according to a release from the chamber. The dinner includes a VIP reception for the sponsors, nominees and nominators, followed by the public reception, dinner, recognition of all nominees and the announcement of this year’s award recipient.

The deadline for nominations and sponsorship is March 2. Nominees can be made by filling out this form and submitting it to Kim Calvert, the chamber’s vice president of marketing and member services, at kim@regionalchamber.com. Contact Calvert at 330 744 2131 ext. 1235 for more information.
