Penitentiary Employees Raise Funds for Joanie’s Promise

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Warden Richard A. Bowen Jr. and employees at the Ohio State Penitentiary closed out Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities by presenting a check for $430 to Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley in support of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center.

The donation will help fund Joanie’s Promise, which ensures that anyone in the Mahoning Valley in need of diagnostic breast services has access to the best care available regardless of ability to pay.

Funds were raised by auctioning off 12 executive parking spots for October. Employees with the winning bids paid to park in spots normally reserved for executives, which are closest to the entrance.

During the month, signs identifying these spots with the title of the executive for whom the spot is reserved were covered with temporary signs emblazoned with a pink ribbon and the name of the winning bidder.
