One-Man Play Shows Immigrant’s Role at Mt. Rushmore

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A one-man play at Youngstown State University Oct. 19 will tell the story of the chief carver of Mount Rushmore.

The free play, “In the Shadow of the Mountain,” will be held in Room 132 of DeBartolo Hall. It begins at 5 p.m.

Performed by Lou Del Bianco, the play tells the story of Luigi Del Bianco, an Italian immigrant who first started on the Mount Rushmore project as driller in 1933 before being promoted to chief carver in 1935. The play will feature maps and photographs to help tell the story.

The younger Del Bianco also wrote “Out of Rushmore’s Shadow,” about his grandfather and headed an effort to get his work recognized by the National Park Service, which it did in 2016.

The performance is sponsored by YSU’s Department of World Languages and Cultures. For more information, call 330 941 3461.
