Pendleton Returns to Direct Opera Western Reserve

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Austin Pendleton will return to the Mahoning Valley next month to be the guest director of Opera Western Reserve’s production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

Pendleton is a native of Warren. He is an actor, director, playwright and, at HB Studio in New York, a teacher of acting. Operas he’s directed include Don Pasquale at Boston Midsummer Opera; and La Boheme at Dicapo Opera in New York. Recent plays he’s directed include the premiere production of Between Riverside and Crazy (2015 Pulitzer Prize for drama) as well as productions at Classic Stage Company of Three Sisters (for which he won an Obie Award), Ivanov (with Ethan Hawke), Hamlet (with Peter Sarsgaard) and Uncle Vanya (with Maggie Gylenhall).

Pendleton’s recent acting appearances include the title role of King Lear. He has also, as an actor, won an Obie Award. In 2007 he won a Drama Desk Award as a Renaissance Man of the Theatre. The plays he has written, and published, include Orson’s Shadow, Uncle Bob, and Booth.

This production marks Austin Pendleton’s first collaboration with Opera Western Reserve. Lucia di Lammermoor will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 on the stage at historic Stambaugh Auditorium.
