Penguins Renew Rivalry with Akron for 2020 Opener
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University will open the 2020 football season at the University of Akron, renewing a rivalry that’s sat dormant for more than 20 years.
The game, Sept. 5, 2020, at InfoCision Stadium, will be the first meeting between the two teams, since November 1995 at Akron’s Rubber Bowl, a 24-10 win for the Penguins. YSU ended the series on a three-game winning streak.
YSU leads the all-time series against the Zips with 19 wins, 14 losses and two ties since the matchup begin in 1940. The two teams have traditionally played for the Steel Tire Trophy, currently on display at the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame at Stambaugh Stadium.
Youngstown State football has not played against a team from the Mid-American Conference since a game against Kent State University in 2003.
For the upcoming 2019 season, the Penguins will open the campaign in Montgomery, Ala., against Samford University Aug. 24 in the Guardian Credit Union FCS Kickoff. The Penguins beat the Bulldogs during the 2016 FCS playoffs on the run to the national championship game.
