Simply Slavic Adds Attractions to Festival

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be held from noon to midnight June 18 on Federal Plaza in downtown with several new attractions being featured throughout the day.

Among the new features are the Ethnic Heritage Tent with information on Slavic cultures and like folk art demonstrations, a “Tell Your Slavic Story” booth open from 2 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m., an expanded ecumenical blessing and a larger children’s area with a build-your-own-village play area and a scavenger hunt.

“We know that sharing the stories of our Slavic history and heritage with the next generation is critical to keeping the culture of our ancestors alive,” said Simply Slavic education chairwoman Sara Wenger in a release. “As the festival has grown, we’ve been able to customize our approach so that we can reach each attendee, even the tiniest festival goers, at their level of interest.”

Returning to the festival are homemade foods from area churches, businesses and ethnic groups, a Slavic marketplace featuring dolls, linens and apparel, a baking contest and the Vatra, a traditional Slavic bonfire.

Nine entertainers are also scheduled to perform at the festival throughout the day: Nonce Sove Tamburitzans, Del Sinchak Orchestra, Lucina Slovak Folk Ensemble, Happy Heart Junior Tamburitzans, Slavjane Folk Ensemble, Living Traditions Folk Ensemble Polish Suite, the Youngstown Area Ukrainian Dancers, Harmonia Folk Ensemble and the Mikey Dee Polka Band.
