Smarts Offering 30 Classes; Enrollment Begins Jan. 16

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Students Motivated by the Arts will offer 30 classes for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade in the spring semester, with enrollment opening at 1 p.m. Jan. 16.

Smarts public programming is free for all students and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes will take place after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.

Smarts classes are offered in five arts disciplines: visual art, music, dance, theater and creative writing.

A highlight of this semester is Smarts’ first collaboration with The Evolve Innovation Center, which will allow students in Smarts animation classes the opportunity to take a deep dive into character development and creation through the new Smarts 3D Character Building Workshop.

Students will work with Robert Kerr, Smarts teaching artist and professional animator, to create and develop their characters. Simultaneously, they will work with Bryant Youngblood of the Evolve Innovation Center to learn to design and print the characters in a 3D format.

DeAudra Edgerson, Smarts public program manager, said she sees this partnership as “a unique opportunity for students to transition from flat, two-dimensional design to three-dimensional design. Once students can think through designing objects that can move through space and time, the possibilities are endless.”
