St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital Recognized for Stroke Care

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital was awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification.

St. Elizabeth Youngstown has been a Primary Stroke Center since 2004 due to the hospital’s ability to perform endovascular thrombectomy procedures and provide post-procedural care, which can greatly improve outcomes.

The skill of providing these live-saving procedures made the hospital eligible for the awards, which came following a rigorous, unannounced onsite review in March by a team of Joint Commission reviewers.

“Providing the highest, most advanced level of care while keeping patients close to home is the driving force behind Mercy Health’s continued investment in the stroke program,” said Kathleen Harley, president of Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. “Earning this new certification recognizes St. Elizabeth Youngstown for excellence in performing thrombectomies and reflects our commitment to serving our community by providing high-quality care. Our physicians, Dr. Praveen Venkat and Dr. Yogesh Gujrati, along with our Interventional Radiology nurses, technicians and our neuroscience program coordinator, deliver remarkable patient care results.”

Venkat said he is proud of the hospital’s team.

“This certification is a testament to Mercy Health and St. Elizabeth Youngstown’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care for stroke patients in our community right here locally close to home,” said Venkat, medical director of Stroke Care Services. “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our entire team, from Mercy Health management to all our physicians and nurses and our support staff. This achievement would not have been possible without their hard work and commitment to excellence.”
