300 Drawn to Judge Baldwin ‘Navigators’ Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Nearly 300 students and educators registered for the Brain Gain Navigators event on March 8, featuring Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Carla Baldwin.

During the virtual career exploration event, Baldwin shared her experiences as a prosecutor as well as a judge, and answered questions posed by the students who attended. For anyone considering a career in law, she said it’s a great way to help people and doesn’t always have to be defined by the criminal cases she hears regularly.

Video from the complete event will be posted here later today.

“There are attorneys for just about everything,” Baldwin said. “If you want to help start a business, learn how to write good contracts so that both the business owner and the contractor are protected.”

Questions ranged from the type of education needed for jobs in the legal profession to what makes the career challenging and rewarding.

The Business Journal will follow up with some of the mentorship groups who participated to get feedback from the students. Groups include Inspiring Minds in Warren and the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley’s Young Women’s Mentorship.

“Helping kids explore careers is an ongoing process, and we will continue to report on the impact and outcomes of this Navigators program,” says Jeremy Lydic, content manager for The Business Journal and Brain Gain Navigators host.

Feedback from those conversations will be published in the April 2021 edition of The Business Journal, as well as on the Brain Gain Navigators page.

The event is the second Brain Gain Navigators tour hosted by The Business Journal in partnership with Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley and the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.
