Horse with Local Ties Races in Travers Stakes
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A horse owned by Youngstown businessman James L. Thompson has drawn post position No. 1 for Saturday’s Travers Stakes, a race at Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga, N.Y. with a $1.25 million purse.
Trigger Warning, a three-year-old colt, has won three races this year. In total, he’s earned nearly $250,000 in eight races this season, most recently placing – finishing second – by a nostril at the Indiana Derby June 23.
“He seems to get stronger every time out,” Thompson said in a release. “Trigger’s really got the heart of a champion and [trainer Mike Rone] has brought out the best in him.”
Thompson is the former CEO of SofTek Software International, a portfolio company at the Youngstown Business Incubator from 2000 to 2009. After he left the company, he founded Brinley Enterprises to race horses. He’s a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and Youngstown State University.
Racing Trigger Warning is Irwin Rosendo, who has been the horse’s jockey the past three races. This year, Rosendo has 31 wins and finished in the top three in 41% of his starts.
According to Forbes, Trigger Warning is tied for the longest odds in the Travers Staks at 30-1. Also competing in the race is Gronkowski, winner of the Belmont Stakes and co-owned by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
The race will be broadcast on NBC, with coverage starting a 4 p.m. Trigger Warning’s post time is 5:45 p.m.
