Tyler Center to Host ‘Untold Stories’ Art Exhibit
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A new exhibit at the Tyler History Center will feature the work of Mahoning Valley native and Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Vanderpool.
“Untold Stories: The forgotten under class in Rust Belt urban renewal” opens Jan. 25 and runs through April 7. The exhibit features curated archival materials Vanderpool selected from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
“Untold Stories’ narrative objectifies outmoded imagery of blighted Rust Belt cities and employs them as allegories to evoke questions about neighborhood decay and gentrification, segregation and integrated cities, generations of unemployment and economic redevelopment,” said the Mahoning valley Historical Society in a release.
A similar exhibit will take place at the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron March 11 through April 19. Each exhibit focuses on the city it is in. The exhibits are both funded by the hosting institutions and an ArtStart grant from the Ohio Arts Council.
“Together, the venues work hand in hand to query the social, political, economic, and racial crises faced by these legacy cities located 50 miles apart in Northeast Ohio,” The Mahoning Valley Historical Society said. “Both exhibitions will include Vanderpool’s imaginary realism prints and multiple videos of filmed first-person accounts with community members reflecting on the past, present, and future of their city.”
Vanderpool has spoken about her works at the University of California Los Angeles, California College of the Arts, Universiteit van Amsterdam and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Copenhagen. Her work has been awarded funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the Danish Arts Council.
The Tyler History Center is open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students and $5 for children.
