Valley Unemployment Rates Increase in May

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local unemployment rates showed a month-over-month increase in May, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday.

Mahoning County’s unemployment rate in May was 5.6%, up from 5.3% in April. Trumbull County’s rate increased from 5.4% to 5.6%, and Columbiana County’s rate rose from 4.9% to 5.3%.

Rates in all three counties were up from a year earlier. The May 2023 unemployment rate was 3.9% in Mahoning County, 4% in Trumbull County and 3.7% in Columbiana County.

The unemployment rate in the city of Youngstown increased from 6.4% in April to 7.1% in May. The rate was up from 4.9% in April 2023.

The city of Warren’s unemployment rate increased from 6.2% in April to 6.7% in May. The rate was up from 5% in April 2023.
