Valley Unemployment Rates Up Sharply in January
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Local unemployment rates increased sharply in January compared with December 2023, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday.
Mahoning County’s unemployment rate in January was 5.2%, up from 3.8% in December. Trumbull County’s rate increased from 3.9% to 5.3%, and Columbiana County’s rate rose from 3.6% to 5.1%.
Rates in Trumbull and Columbiana counties were down from a year earlier. The January 2023 unemployment rate was 5.4% in Trumbull County and 5.5% in Columbiana County. Mahoning County’s unemployment rate in January 2023 was the same as January 2024 at 5.2%.
The unemployment rate in the city of Youngstown increased from 4.4% in December 2023 to 5.9% in January. The rate was down from 6.1% in January 2023.
The city of Warren’s unemployment rate increased from 4.6% in December 2023 to 6.0 in January, unchanged from the rate in January 2023.
