Youngstown Playhouse Starts Season with ‘Dreamgirls’
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Playhouse will kick off its 96h season with a production of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” the weekends of Sept. 6 and 15.
The play, which premiered on Broadway in 1981 and at the Playhouse in 1989, tells the fictional story of a musical group in the vein of The Supremes during the 1960s and ‘70s, featuring songs from across genres, including R&B, gospel, disco and pop.
Among the play’s songs are the Grammy-winning “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “One Night Only.”
The local cast includes Joshua William Green as label producer Curtis Taylor Jr., Sharleen Riley as Dreamgirl Effie White, James Major Burns as James Thunder Early (based on James Brown) and Jennifer Zamis as Deanna Jones, the leader of the Dreamgirls.
The production is directed by Trevail Maurice and choreographed by Kiara Jones. Jaron M. LeGrair and Curtis Tate provide musical direction.
“Dreamgirls” will be held Sept. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sept. 8 and 15 at 2:30 p.m.
