Youngstown to Celebrate 226 Years

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – On June 25, Youngstown Cityscape will be hosting a variety of activities to kick off their healthy community day and the and celebrate the city’s 226th birthday.

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and Mercy Health will sponsor the activities. Additional thanks goes to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society (MVHS), Ward Bike Club, Trailside Bicycle Co. and Stepping Out Youngstown.

Activities will begin at 10 a.m. at B&O Station Banquet Hall. There, community members will receive safety and maintenance meeting by CycWard, followed by an hour-long bike ride at 11 a.m.

The 8-mile long community bike ride will end at the Cinderella Bridge at Mill Creek Park. A shorter ride is available at 1 p.m. to the Calvin Center for the Arts where there will be a plant-based food literacy demonstration.

A “Youth Bike Rodeo” is also available for kids. The first 50 kids under 12 will receive free helmets and lights. They will also have the opportunity to win a bicycle after the rodeo’s completion.

Additionally, Stepping Out Fitness Youngstown will be hosting a Zumba class at 11:30 a.m. on the stage by the river. Free blood pressure checks will also be available, beginning at 10 a.m.

For a less physically demanding experience, the MVHS will be hosting guided history tours. The first will be taking place 11 a.m. on the Mahoning River and the founding of Youngstown. A second tour will take place at 1 p.m. on the Mahoning Commons, WRTA, the newly renovated Hopewell Theater and the Calvin Center.

Two food literacy demonstrations and samplings will be available in the afternoon. Catherine Arroyo will speak the first demonstration. The B&O demonstration will focus on healthy barbeque food literacy.

Erin Timms will host the second demonstration and sampling at the Calvin Center. The focus will be on plant-based food literacy.

To conclude the day, a 3 p.m. birthday celebration will be taking place with a cake, coloring activities for children and MVHS’ traveling Mahoning River history display.

Parking for the events will be available at the B&O Banquet Station, WRTA and the Calvin Center for the Arts.
