YSU Football Spring Finale Canceled

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University football team abruptly ended its spring football season on Wednesday, the Missouri Valley Football Conference announced.

The Penguins, who were 1-6 this season, were scheduled to play its final game Saturday against North Dakota at Stambaugh Stadium. The contest was rescheduled from March 27, but was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak by North Dakota.

YSU began spring play on Feb. 21 at North Dakota State and has practiced for nearly three full months since preseason camp started in January.

YSU opens the fall schedule Sept. 2 against Incarnate Word from the Southland Conference at Stambaugh Stadium.

“The efforts by our team and staff throughout this entire year have been incredible,” YSU football head coach Doug Phillips said in a statement. “To play seven games this spring says a lot about their passion for football and commitment to our program. We look forward to finishing off this semester strong academically and will continue to work hard to be ready to go when fall camp starts in just three months.”

All fans who purchased tickets for Saturday’s game have the option to request a refund or donate to YSU’s World Penguin Day Campaign for athletic scholarships and championship rings. Call the ticket office at 330 941 1978, email arsnodgrass@ysu.edu or visit the athletic ticket office in Stambaugh Stadium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
