YSU Men’s Golf Team Receives Academic Honors

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University men’s golf team was one of 41 Division I nationwide programs to receive President’s Special Recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America for posting a team GPA above 3.5.

YSU was one of four Horizon League men’s golf programs to earn All-Academic Team recognition, joining Oakland, Purdue-Fort Wayne and Robert Morris. To qualify, teams must post a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Dayton was the only other Ohio school to receive the presidential honors, while Fort Wayne was one of two Horizon League teams to get that distinction.

The Penguins posted a 3.55 cumulative GPA for the academic year, being named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team and earning special recognition four consecutive seasons.

All members of the 2020-21 golf team finished with at least a 3.0 GPA and seven were above 3.5.

“It’s always great to see our program receive these academic honors,” says YSU golf head coach Tony Joy. “This has been such a special group over the last few years and the entire Penguin athletic family should be proud of their hard work in the classroom.”

Also, YSU golfers Ken Keller, Bryan Kordupel and Kevin Scherr were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Keller and Scherr are receiving the prestigious academic honor for the second consecutive season while Kordupel is being recognized for the first time.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status in 2020-21, a student-athlete must have been a sophomore, junior or senior academically, recorded a stroke average under 76, maintained a minimum cumulative career GPA of 3.2 and participated in 40% of the team’s competitive rounds. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
