Leadership Mahoning Valley Launching New Training Program

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Leadership Mahoning Valley will launch its new board training program, the On Board! Governance Academy, on Thursday.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective nonprofit board member. Topics will include foundational best practices in nonprofit governance. The training will provide participants with an understanding of the sector, the basic tenets of governance and their individual roles and responsibilities as nonprofit leaders.

The program is designed for both new and established board members and/or nonprofit leadership and will include content from Charitable University, a new learning platform developed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office that provides tools on important elements in leading a charitable organization: board governance, governmental filings, financial operations and internal controls, filings and recordkeeping and fundraising.

Beth Short, director of charitable outreach and education for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section, will be the guest presenter. She has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations.

Short is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Ohio University and serves as president-elect of the National Association of State Charity Officials. She has a background in journalism, legislative and public affairs and training.

Participants who complete the daylong training program will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley BoardMatch program, which will connect individuals interested in serving on boards with nonprofit organizations in need of board members.

Charitable leaders who complete the training will also receive completion credit for the program, and their names will be listed on the attorney general’s website as acknowledgement of their commitment to learning about their roles as sector leaders. They will also receive a completion certificate that can be shared with funders.

The initial program will take place at the HBK Training Center, 6603 Summit Drive, Canfield. The day will begin with breakfast and registration at 8 a.m., followed by the program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost to attend is $50 per person. Breakfast and lunch are included. Reservations are required.

Additional Leadership Mahoning Valley On Board! Governance Academy sessions will be scheduled throughout the year.
